Kurogane was born and raised in Suwa in Japan by loving parents who were the lord and lady of the province. As a child he was energetic and a loyal, dutiful son who was skilled at the sword and well on his way to learning the true strength that his father wanted to make sure he understood. He cared very much for his ailing mother, who was the priestess in charge of upholding the wards of Suwa. When he was still very young, tragedy struck. A portal from another world opened and a hand reached through, stabbing his mother fatally through the chest. Moments later, his father was revealed to have been killed by a demon, leaving nothing behind except his sword and arm.
Kurogane lost himself, grabbing up his father’s sword and going on a rampage, attacking almost anything in sight. Kendappa, the empress of Japan and her younger sister, Tomoyo-hime, came upon him in this state, and after suppressing him by sending a sword through his hand, Tomoyo manages to calm him. He awakes at Kendappa’s palace and thereafter calls himself “Kurogane” and serves as a ninja dedicated to protecting Tomoyo.
Instead of seeking true strength, Kurogane is angry and restless, killing unnecessarily and seeking only to be the strongest. His rash actions and merciless attitude towards fighting cause Tomoyo to send him away on a journey throughout the worlds, where he meets Sakura, Syaoran, Mokona and Fai, his companions who would become something like a makeshift family to him. He is forced to trade his sword (a replica of his father’s) in order to do this. He acts apathetic towards Syaoran and his quest at first, and yet during the course the journey grows ever closer to his traveling companions.
